In 1973, the SK-OV-3 cell line was established from ovarian tissue removed from a 64-year-old Caucasian female with adenocarcinoma. THe SK-OV-3 cell line is now used as a transfection host, exhibits epithelial-like morphology and considered a tumorigenic cell line.

This cell line can also be used for xenografting or xenotransplantation in mice:
